Jawa is a motorcycle manufacturer in the Czech republic, formerly Czechoslovakia. It was named after its founder Janeček bought the motorcycle production of Wanderer in 1929, by concatenating the first letters of Janeček and Wanderer. The company is still active today.

There is no doubt that there's a huge European market for a middleweight single-cylinder streetbike. That's the market which all but kept BMW afloat when their Boxers were out of fashion; BMW sold over 65,000 of the first generations F650s (never mind the CS and GS developments), and Aprilia didn't do too shabbily with the Pegaso, either. Similarly, Royal Enfield have built an entire brand around their 500cc single. So there would seem to be a waiting audience for the new Jawa 650 which is being imported by F2 Motorcycles in Banbury.

Frantisek Janecek began manufacturing Wanderer motorcycles under licence in 1927 in order to diversify the interests of his arms factory. Having bought the tooling for a 500cc model, in 1929 he rebranded the machine with the name JAWA, derived from the first two letters of the words "Janacek" and "Wanderer". It was a shaft-drive model with a pressed steel frame, powered by a 498cc OHV engine.

On the 23rd of January 1878, Frantisek Janecek was born in Klaster nad Dedinou, one of the smallest villages of East Bohemia in former Czechoslovakia. He studied mechanics at the technical school in Prague and continued with his studies at the college of Berlin. He then returned to Prague, where he started to work for Kolben in Vysocany (one of the biggest companies in Bohemia). At the age of 23, he was entrusted with the management of a new factory in Holland, where he met his future wife.
